This salt is one of the best salt of the earth.It comes from an ancient sea which is dried up 200 million years ago.At a depth of 75 m.it is still pure natural salt without loads of environmentally with many trace elements.

For export only source salt from the best pool is reserved . This salt is then thoroughly cleaned of hard-working women by hand in the warehouse. Then it is ground and packaged. Because a successful export was a lot of money to be invested and the workers are well paid in the saline.

The annual salt production of export quality source shall not exceed 300 tons.

Therefore the source of salt is not unlimited available !

The cooperative is a very correct run business , all support staff and seasonal workers are taxed and health insurance , and of course there is no child labor in the saline.

SALT EXTRACTION
Basically, the salt production runs still like the old days . The location of the saline and the small basin can be no use of large machines, such as in the vast sea water to saline . The only new feature is a submersible pump, which deep down brings up the salt water, because the top is fresh water and this does not mix with salt water.

With 2 teeter-totter buckets the brine was brought up earlier by going into day and night shifts .

From the fountain of the brine is then directed into deeper reservoirs, where begins the evaporation and heating . From there, the brine flows through small channels or Road Tubes in the 470, partly, very small pools. During the evaporation process, the crystals which are constantly being doused with fresh brine .

This work is extremely hard, it will work with rod buckets and even with by uge heat. Ideally, this operation takes only one week because the brine is seven times as salty as sea water. Then the salt is pushed together and shoveled on the wooden platforms .

There it dries about 60 hours in a pyramid shape in the hot sun and is then driven with wheelbarrows to the main channel , where it is with small vehicles to the scale and then brought into the warehouse . There, the salt rests first and dries a little more until it is milled and packaged.

GEOLOGY
The Saline is located on an elongated Salzdiapir ( salt dome ) at the south end of the 33 km long fault zone of Porto de Mos - Rio Maior , where the salt is forced upon . In the unsuccessful search for oil and gas in the 50 ies up to 2000 m dammed salt have been pierced.

In the Marinhas do Sal the salt dome stands at just below the surface and the valley is formed by Ablaugung of salt during the millennia as " Subrosionssenke " . Pure rock salt has been drilled under saline at a depth of 75 m.

HISTORY
The legend tells of a shepherd girl who moved with his sheep and goats through this valley . She was very thirsty and joyfully discovered a place where clear water from the Ground bubbled . She quickly bent down to the source to clear their thirst ...... and spat scared salt water!

Later, the current fountain was built at this location. The oldest surviving document is a contract of sale of 1177 by the Knights Templar from the near Tomar acquired a portion of the Saline. With this, the salt extraction in Rio Maior is confirmed for 800 years . Tradition says , however, that the Romans used the salt dome with its sources. Prehistoric finds from the area can also connect to a very early salt production. It is also known that earlier further north were the salt-water pool and were fed from another source .
Since time immemorial belonged to the small salt pans different owners . The Knights Templar and the kings included already the owners. Currently there are about 80 families , mostly small farmers who banded together in the 70 ies to an agricultural cooperative and thus saved the decay of Saline and the old craft .
